NOTES AND COMMENTS,
[Br GlehcouJ
The autumn meeting of the Christchurch Racing Clnb takes place at Plumpton Park this afternoon. F. D. Jones has been suffering with an injured foot since the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting, but is now able to get about. He has gone south to ride at Plumpton Park to-day, and then goes on to Ashburton. C. Jenkins will ride Contralto,at the Egmont Club's meeting next week. T. Wilson took two horses to the Marlborough meeting, and each filled second place twice at the fixture. Winning jockeys at tho Marlborough Bating piub's meeting were 0. Jenkins (6), -T. Pritchard (5), F. Cress, A. M'Millan, A. M'Connon, R. Young, and C. Emerson (1 each). y Until this year, Jenkins had not ridden for four years at a Blenheim fixture; On hi? last visit there ho won six races on the two days, Gold Crown, who won the big raco on each day, being one of his mounts; The best are not always the dearest]! Armlet (500 guineas) and Golden Slipper (4500 guineas) were sold on the same day. Since then Armlet has won numerous races, totalling nearly £4000, but.Golden Slipper has won only one event. This season's three-year-old fillies must be voted an exceptionally good lot, including, as they do, Salute, Lady Medallist, Ingoda, Milan, and Sea Elf. J. Lowe has booked boxes at Ellerslie for Truganini, Magneto, and Advantage, who are being railed north next week. ' The Randwick- trainer, T. Payton, who usually has , a very big team of horses in work at this time of the year, has now only three in commission, Apple Pie, Still,' and Dunypling.
Lady Medallist has been easily one of tho .most consistent .winners in the Dominion this season.. She opened her winning account for tho season at Marton in September last by -annexing the Shorts Handicap, five furlongs. The same month she won the Flying Handicap and tho Telegraph Handicap, at the R-angifcikei spring meeting. At Wanganui.she won.tho Guineas and filled third place in the Marangai Handicap. Her next '. appearance was at the Otaki, meeting in October, and she won the principal handicap at that fixture. The same month she ran third-in the Champion Plato at Trentham, and was then taken to Masterten to win the Mastorton Cup. After this tho St. Alwynno filly was treated to a brief spell, and then prepared for the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. She had a very bad run in this event, and for the first time during'tho season finished out of a place, but on the second day of the fixture she ran away with the Alexander Handicap, seven furlongs. In the Wellington Cup she was unplaced, and received a bump or two that prevented her being started again at the fixture.' Since then she has won the Tafanaki Cup at New Plymouth, run second in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham, and wem- the Marlborough Cup and President's Handicap at Blenheim. This season she has thus annexed ten races, run second once, and third twioe, her earnings amounting to well over £1500. The spell she is now to enjoy is. well merited'.
The well-known horseman, F. D. Jones, left for the south by tho' Maori last night, to fulfil sovoral riding engagements at tho Plumpton meeting to-day. Jones is a native of Riccarton, and his services in the saddle are always in great demand in the Canterbury district. Amongst his mounts today are Rose Noble, in tho Autumn Handicap, and Aloxis, in the. Welter. It may be mentioned that Jones has an extraordinary percentage of wins on Alexis, and so far has not been beaten on tho aged Lord Rosslyn gelding. Prior to tho Easter meeting of the C.J.C., this horse was galloping as well .as anything that worked at ; Riccarton,; but unfortunately ho burst his hoof iust before the fixture. He is now himself again, and in a letter to the writor, received yesterday, a' wellknown trainer • expressed tho opinion that tho horso was galloping ■ better than ever.
Pearl Reef pulled up very lame aftei dead-heating m the Hurdles at Blenheim on Thursday, and it is feared that his breakdown will necessitate a lengthy spell,.
The light-weight jockey, L. Wilson, mado the trip to Blenheim ' to vide 'Lamsdorff in the Cup, but on arrivalthere ho. developed a bad attaok ol rheumatism, and was compelled to Return ■ home at once.
Considering that he was a maiden performer over fences, 'Glen acquitted himself very .well last week. The first day, when carrying 61b. abovo the minimum impost, he won easily, though his jumping was in some cases faulty, due no doubt to lack of schooling at. a fast pace. .Next day he * was raised 161b., and after making all his own punning, he dead-heated with Pearl Reef in the fair time of 3min. (Usee. In this raco he gave a much improved display of fencing, and with inoro racing should be,. capable of winning plenty of races in second-class company.
Tho riding of one of the visiting horsemen on tho opening day of tho Blenheim fixture was s of such ah .unsatisfactory character that he received a warning from the authorities' beforo the racing commenced on the second day
W. H. M'Kay, who was formerly connected with S. McSsona's stables, has relinquished the profession of raceriding, and intends to devote himself to agricultural pursuits. After his poor showing of tho second day at Blenheim, when greatly fancied by his connections for the President's Handicap, it looks as if Waikaraka's heart is not in the right place. Ho and the favourite, Lady Medallist, were galloping down tho back stretch together, but the chestnut appeared to bo going tho easier of tho two, and H. Gray was standing up in tho saddle to keep his horso in check. Suddenly Jenkins on tho favourite spurted, and beforo Gray could alter his tactics the mare had a three-lengths' break. This was too much for Waikaraka, and bo failed to try a yard afterwards. There are many horses, of this disposition who, when galloping against the bit, appear to bo going easily, but In reality they are doinjj their best, and when called on for a further effort, aro unable, to respond. At best Waikaraka appears to be but a moderate secondrater. '''Vigilant" writes: "In 'Paris Sport' I find it stated that Tod Sloan, having applied to tho Commissairos do la Socicto d'Encouragement for a renewal of his jockey's license, was informed that although there oxistcd no objection on their part, it was impossible to acoedo to bis request until lie had boon granted one by tho stewards, of the English Jockey Club. I have nlways understood that, tho. boot was on the other log, and that, but for the French veto bin license hero would have been restored long since. In tho circumstances Sloan'Would appear to bo between two stools, but no matter which legwears the boot, suroly tho time litis arrived when the means to earn his livelihood might, with grace nnd justice bo restored to him. Ten years h.ivi elapsed sinee, as a consenuencn. of bavinc backed Codoman heavily for the
Cambridgeshire, in which lie* was beaten by BenUi, the iittlo American phenomenon has Btood down. No doubt his offence was grave, but not criminal, inasmuch as it was his own extant ha was backing, and the lasa of what should haveboen tho most useful years <rf his life is indeed heavy ponance. Much worse t.Tmrga luttre indeed been perpetrated by jockeys on the English turf, and pardoned hi the course of time."
