CHINA ARMING.

FAMILY LIFE. NEW VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT. By Telegranh—Press Association-Oopyrlgat Sydney, May 6. Captain Varawa, a Russian merchant in business in Shanghai, is at present visiting Australia. He says the biggest question just now in China is the change in public opinion respecting military service. Tho best families had looked on military service as something . bonoath them; they were now actively participating in the formation of volunteer companies. There is, ho.says,'a steadily-growing fooling in favour of China for the Clu'nese. The recont outbreak in Hunan province against the missionaries was a small sectional uprising, against the missionaries only, because of interference with family matters. The Chinese acknowledge that tho missionaries do good to the sick and poor, and teach thom good lessons, but tho point is that they also break up families. When one or two of the sons are taken away from the family belief to. be made Christians, the family honour is affected. If whole families were proselytised it. would be all right, but to proselytise a portion of a family is unwise, i No one recognises what family life means to tho Chinese unless ho has I lived there.

It is, Captain Varawa states, a belief among tho Chinese that China will pass through its greatest struggle from 1907 till 1917. Seers expect a great war—probably with Japan.
