An oarthquake on Wednesday cvon-. ing destroyed the town of Coreago, in the Central American Republic of Coßta Rica. ■.:'.•■ Five hundred persons were killed. Only meagre details are to hand. ■ The telegraphs have been levelled with the ground, and the operators have been killed. A COLLIERY EXPLOSION. UN UNITED STATES. REPORTED THAT 185 ABE DEAD. New York, May 5. An explosion occurred in the Palos coalmine, near Birmingham, Alabama. It is reported that 185 persons are dead. ' A SHEET OF FLAME FROM THE PIT-MOUTH. MAN KILLED 100 YARDS AWAY. • (Reo. May 6, 9.50 p.m.) ■ / ' New Yorlt, May 6. A sheet of flame shot from the mouth of .the mine .with a tremendous report. A clerk one hundred yards away was instantly, killed. Three bodies have been recovered. Rescue work has been temporarily abandoned owing to black-damp.
