BOY SCOUT NOTES.
(By "Alert.")
The Newtown troop spent a very enjoyable time at their clubroom on Friday evening last week. A send-off was given to Patrol Leader Boyle, whoso future home is to bo at Westport. Thirtythree boys turned up, and each brought some refreshments, so that the table was soon filled with good things, which the boys'did fnll justice to later in the evening. A magio lantern helped to make the evening a success, a picture of General Sir E. S. S. Baden-Powell being received with great enthusiasm. Games were indulged in,'and. a prize was won by Scout Norris, who guessed the nearest, number of apples in a bag. A photograpn of the troop was presented to Patrol Leader Boyle amidst expressions of goed feeling, and it is to be hoped that he will either connect. himself to some existing troop in Westport, or set one going. On Saturday afternoon the troop were shown over the Parliament Buildings and. the Museum, the boys evincing a keen interest in everything. The Kelburne troop mot at the city boundary, Miramar, last Saturday, and practised tracking on the Lyall Bay sandhills. Two signalling stations were also established and some messages sent. Half the boys were told off to man a portion of the beach and prevent the rest from passing their line., A few were captured, but most of 'them made a wide detour, and so got round. Kilbirnie "Hawkcs and Rams" built a flax shelter on the eastern .flat, of Lyall Bay. A camp fire was then lighted,; and potatoes and onions' roasted in its glowing embers.
There was a great amount of interesting business for the Scoutmasters' Association to transact at its last meeting, in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms. In addition to considering a sot of regulations framed to govern the working of the Wellington district, the regulations issued by the Cadet Office were also discussed. Particulars of the starting of patrols at the Upper Hntt were given. Mr. Coloneus, scoutmaster of the Boys' Institute troop, and Dr. F. Kemp were elected as additional representatives on the district executive. A general church parade of scouts will be held in the Basin Reserve at 10 o'clock j on Sunday. After assembling, scouts will march to. their churches. , . Word has been received that the Pongaroa nnd ICaituna patrols, under their roapeciive leaders, nad a very successful field day on Saturday. The Kaituna patrol rode sevon miles in order to be present. Some of the scouts were measured for their outfit, and seven new boys were sworn in by their chief scoutmaster, the Rev. J. Rattray. Some scouting games were thon gone through. A flag was hidden by one boy in the centre of some dense bush, and the scouts were told that it was abont 300 or 400 yards north or south, as the case might be. Both patrols worked well, and in each cape tho flag was found. Other games and instruction were given in tho afternoon. • . , . It is with regret that one hae to renort that Eric Hill, of Waione patrol, had the misfortune to break his leg recently while doing some work on his father's farm. We hope that Erie is we on the way to recovery, and that he will Boon be amongst the scouts again.
