MAYORAL INSTALLATIONS.
(Br TeleEraph.—Special GorreßDondent.) Wanganui, May 4. Mr. C. E. Mackay, who was elected Mayor unopposed, was installed to-day, councillors mating thr usual congratulatory speeches. In reply, the Mcyor, after reviewing the year's work, referred, to that still to be done in the direction of amalgamating other suburbs with the borough, tho extension of the tramways and gas service, and the need for raising .fnrther loans—the latter for the special purpose of providing water, drainage, and gas to those suburbs which recently came into the borough. Fielding, May i. Councillor Goodbehero was duly installed as Mayor at noon to-day. He stated that the only question of a large nature which would come before the council, would probably be the electric lighting echeme, and he was sure that when the proposal was laid before the' council there would be a large majority for it. Another question which would have to bo settled was tho Opera House scheme, and that, no doubt, would have to be placed before the ratepayers sooner or later. The appointment _of Mr. Geary as town clerk was, he belfovod, a good one. (By Telecraph;—Press Association;!" ■ Dunedin, May 5. The Mayor (Mr. Walker) in bis valedictory address referred to the low prices being charged for the supply of electricity for motive and lighting purposes leading to unfair competition with the gasworks. He foreshadowed the need of asking Parliament; to consent to tho absorption of the Drainage Board by the city.
