The only Ministers of tho Crown wt# will be ont of town to-day are the Prim# Minister, who is en roote to Invercargill, and the Hons. G. Fowlds and T. Mackenzie, who are in the Auckland district. Mr. R. W. Holmes, Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department who has been on a visit to Wanganui, will return to town to-day. Mr. G. Shirtclifle, who has been on A visit to England, is expected to arrive back, via Sydney, to-day. ■»■■'• Mr. Guy Pulton, of the firm of Brewer, Fulton, and Co., general merchants, .Victoria Street, and a nephew of Mr. Jamea E. Pulton, of Wellington Terrace, is seriously ill. Mr. Fdlton, who is quits a young man, was only married in December last. Mr. H. R. Carey, of the Kelburns Tramways engineering 6taff, has passed the examination for extra first-class stationary engineer's certificate. Mr. E. Huggins, of the City Tramways . staff, also passed the examination, The Rev. J. D. M'Arthur has been appointed to the Bainbridge Memorial Cliurch at Rotorua. He was welcomed at a social held on Thursday last.
The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital -on Sunday of Mr. Jam6s Jeritcins, an old resident of Wellington, and a highly respected member of Court Sir George Bowen, A.O.F. The deceased had been a private' night-watohman for a' quarter of a century for Willis and Featherston Street firms, and was esteemed for the conscientious manner in which he performed his duties. ,
Among the passengers to leave by tha Ulimaroa on Friday for Sydney and forward v ports, who have been booked by Messrs. Cook and Son, are the following: Mrs. R. Hope, Mrs. and Miss Brodie, Mr. A. Berman (of Lambton Quay, who is leaving on a tour round the world), Mr. H. Hesketli, of Taihape, Mr. Chas. M. Montefiore, and Mr. J. B. Godkin.
Mr. Te Heuheu Tukino, the leadinf Taapo chief, is visiting Wellington.
Mr. Fred Pirani, chairman of th« Wangaiiui Education Board, who was nominated by that board (or the vacancy on tlio Victoria College Council,, has withdrawn his nomination' 6ince Sir Robert Stout /was nominated. Mr. Pirani recognises Sir Robert as being practically the "father" of Victoria College, and thinks he should be returned to tho council unopposed as <a well-deserved compliment.
At a, meeting of the Dunedin Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, Mr. John Jacobs, who has filled the position of Assistant Town Clerk since 1900, wa« appointed uecretary at a salary of J2io(l per annum. There were 63 applications for the position.—Press Association. ,
Mr. A. Macpherson, Supervisor of Field Experiments, South Island, has been appointed to supervise the exhibits of the Department of Agriculture at the various winter shows throughout the Dominion, commencing with tho Dunedin Winter Show on June 1. ,A : private letter received from Mr. G. F. Brodie, sub-editor of the "Taranaki Herald," and formerly of the "Evening Post" staff, states tliat he. is improving in health. Acting upon medical advice, he lias decided to take a lengthy rest (states the "Taranaki Daily News"). The 17 applicants for the position nf electrical engineer to the Ijivercargill Borough Council have been reduced to three—Messrs. Lawrence Birks (Rotorua), Scott Symington (Christchurch), and J. F. Welch (Holntika). A final selection wjll be made on Friday nest. : |
