ATHLETICS.

THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. A meeting of tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was hold last evening in the office of the secretary (Mr. W. G. Talbot). Mr. A. Marryatt presided, and there were also present:—Messrs. C. E. Bridge, E. L. ChaiTey, J. H. Pollock, W. .]?. Ross, J. Thompson, W. F.. Larkin, H. Henderson, and A. Davies.

llcssrs. 11. W. STVilly and T. Walslio came as a deputation from tho Wellington Centro in regard to tho proposal to alter the boundaries of the districts under control of tho various' centres. It was pointed out that the Wellington Centre considered that it should control sport in the whole of Wellington Provincial District, tho centre did not care whether Marlborough, Nelson, and the' .West Coast wero excluded from its distriot, and placed under the jurisdiction of Canterbury, and, in any event, tho oentre woukl not quarrel.about whatever rearrangement- of the districts might l>B decided on. It was also pointed cut that Hawke's Bay did not want to sever from Wellington to form another centre. Consideration of the matter was deferred by tha council iiutil next meeting, and it was resolved to write .to the secretary of the centres' conference asking for a prompt reply to tho .remit on the subject. Otago Centre wrote that Mr. J. H. Pollock had been elected as one of the centre's representatives on tho Council of the N.Z.A.A.A., vice Mr. W. H Pollock, resigned. The centre's delegates were, therefore, Messrs. A. Marryatt and J. H. Pollock.

The Amateur Athletic Union of Aus--tralia wrote that the reinstatement of J. F. H. M'Carthy, of. Wellington, had been confirmed by the executive. The union also confirmed the reinstatement of J. Ernest Nolan (Auckland) as an amateur.

The. Customs Department wrote, under direction by (he Minister for Customs, that there was at present no law under which trophies coming into New Zealand could be admitted free of duty. When, however, the tariff came up for revision, the question of admitting without a money deposit, such trophies, won abroad, as wore not to remain in New Zealand would b& considered.
