At the Police Court yesterday a mail named Alexander Jones was fined 40s. and costs, -or fourteen days in gaol, for insulting a Chinaman. It appears the man made' refcrenco to tlie Celestial's colour in languago very much more forcible than polite, and the police found it necessary to interfere. Mr. Becconsall is coaching the Palmerston section of the Boy Scouts in ambulance drill. Tlio boys are showing great aptit-udo in absorbing the instruction in first aid and relay business. The lads aro becoming quite expert- under Mr. Becconsall's tuition, and have put in some excellent work. The man Hanna, as Assyrian liawker who met with sovero injuries some months ago through a railway engine running into his covered van while he was crossing tho line at tho south end of Palmerston, is making very slow recovery in the hospital, and seems likely to bo an inmate of the hospital for somo time longeT. Tlie newly-formed Manawa.tu Hunt Club oponcd the season with a drag hunt at Longburn on Saturday afternoon. Tho run was witnessed by a largo number of people .of both sexes, who wero keenly interested in ,tho proceedings. Among, tho followers wero a number from Pahiatiia. and Levin. Mr. J. Sweeney was in charge of tho field, and before commencing tho run lie congratulated tho members on having obtained an- affiliated Inmt- in the Manawatu.. Promptly at 3 o'clock Mr. D.. Bennett, the lion, huntsman, came trotting up with four braco of hounds, tho drag having been laid by Messrs M'Ewen and ' Robinson. The hounds were cast off in oho of Mr. j. A. Mitchell's paddocks at Tiakitahuna, and tho pack was soon racing in full cry t-owards ' the river. Soon the field was strung out in straggling order, the pace being fast. Th© fifty followers had to race hard to keep in. sight of the hounds, the courso ooing over fifty fences, ending at Mr. J. A. Mitchell's residence, near Longburn. The distance traversed was about fivo miles, a rerv severe test for green horses. After the run Mr. Sweeney, on behalf of tlie members, thanked tho propcTty-owners and officials who prepared the jumps. There was a good attendance of membora at the annual meeting of tho Manawatu Savage Olub last night.- Mr. R. Davis was reappointed hori. secretary and treasurer. .
In addressing .the annual meeting' of parishioncrs.,;of.-All-rSaintS' parish last evening, - Archdeacon Harper reforred to the. growth of the parish since lie-took chargo teiu years ago. At that time, too, fchoro wero; only four Sunday Schools in the district, now thero were thirteen, while threo new churches had been built and two othors enlarged, .three halls or Sunday Schools had been built, and the Children's Home had been established. Then tho first.stefia had been taken towards tho erection of a fine new church for tho town. When he took chargo the receipts of tilt/ parish ran into about £IUOO, now it had rnoro than doublod. Morrah offered to provido £500 at 4J por cent, towards tile new churoh building fund, and the committee was instructed to push forward tho scheme in every 'way possible. A motion congratulating the Rev. C.' C. Harper on being raised to the position of Archdeacon was carried unanimously on the motion .of Mr. L. A. Abraham seconded by Mr. E. H. Morrah. Votes of thanks were also accorded to Sunday School tcachers and tho members of tho Lauios' Guild.
His Worship tho Mayor, Mr. J. A. Nash, gave- an account of his stewardslup to .the burgesses last evening in tho Municipal Hall. Captain Haydon, senior member of tho Borough Council, presided,' and the Mayor gave a lucid account of the whole of the work that had been done during tho year. Ho expressed, gratification .at the confidence tliat had been shown in him by his return, unopposed, two years in succession, -and trusted that, at tho expiry of his third term as Mayor of tile town, lie would still' retain that confidence. No questions were asked, the burgesses apparently being perfectly satisfied with tfie. Mayor and council, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Nash for his address.
