Wanganui, April 28^ At the 'meeting of the Wanganui Edu-cation-Board.a member asked if the Education Department had yet sent any. reply .to the request made some time ago ■ for a residence for-a teacher atEangataua on the Main Trunk. On being in-' formed-that no reply had been received, the member proposed that the board protost strongly against the action of the :■ Government in delaying the matter, : speaking in .indignant terms about the: conditions the teacher- and his family ' were forced to put up with They were compelled to live in a tent, and the position would become worse with tho winter, ; if. indeed, it would'be. possible for-the teacher and his family to continue to live there.'_. Other member?., of the board spoke.in similar terms, and the board resolved to again bring the matter before 1 the Department. ''.'."..■ A public meeting was held last nighi -' Under the auspices of the Beautifying" Society to consider the question ,of ■ deforestation. There was a large attend-. : ance, which listened to several addresses on the: subject, and, at the conclusion* the meeting unanimously passed: tl)e following resolution:—"That this meeting. ■-.: of citizens of Wanganui urge upon the. Messrs. J. E. Hughes and"D. Muiro havs' been appointed acting-lieutenanta in the Wanganui Eifles and Irish Ejfles, respectively, pending the -passing of. examinations to secure, commissions.
