(From Our Soecial OorresDondenU ! Mr. A. B. Roots, of/Alicetown, aunouno.es himself as a candidate for the ■vacant position on the Lower Hutt Borough Council, caused by the retirement of Mr. W. A. Mowbray. Mr. J. T. Hawthorn hae also been nomjnated. for the vacancy. His form of nomination has been signed by .John Cudby, T. W. M'Donald, C. Hollard, W. Baxter, T. A. Peterkiu, S. I'\ Bennett, T. P.- Allen, and M. J. Hodgins. , St. Augustine's Hall presented a pretty appearance last night, the occasion being a "gift night" in aid of the. Japanese fair ; for the Citizens'' Band. Dance music was supplied by the. Citizens' Band for the first part of the evening, and by. Mrs, Pollock for the latter portion. ''Extras" wore supplied by Miss Y. Davis and Mr. Kaye. Songs 'were contributed , by''Messrs. 431lis, M'Eivan, Dolling, an'd Wilton. The weekly session of the Hope of Petone Lodge of Good Templars was held in the Ranfurly Hall, Petone, last evening. : TluSre' was a very large attendance, this being the first meeting under the competition system. Bro. Yt'. Denby, C.T., presided. Four new membefs were • initiated. The election of officers for'.tho ensuing quarter resulted as follows:—Bro. tV. Denby, :C.T.; Sis. A. Smith, V.T,; Bro.
