A GREAT MATHEMATICIAN.
• The new Sadleraan Professor of Pure Mathematics at Cambridge, Dr. E. W. ■Hobson, is .one of the few Christ's Col■kgo men—they number only six, against Trinity's 56 ajid St. John's 55—who succeeded in, carrying oil the Senior Wrau.glershi)). That was 32 ■ years ago, and .since then Dr. Hobson has devoted himsolf to the science of time.arid space irith such success that he has for years , been distinguished in the mathematical world for his many, profound contributions to mathematics and mathematical, physics. From 1900 to 1902 he was president of the London Mathematical Society, and three years ago he published a bulky volume dealing in a masterly manner with some outstanding difficulties in the application of certain mathematical .methods to the 'solution of problems in ■physics. <At present Dr. Hobson. is Stokes Lecturer on Mathematics. He is also Fellow of .the -Royal: .Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, and • of his College, and in 1907 his many contributions . to' the .history and development of mathematics, were recognised , 8y the aitai'd to him of one of the Royal, Medals' of the Royal Society. • Ho is a native of Derby, and's3 years of age.
