THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.
"ONEfOF THE MOST IMPORTANT." •(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier, April 25. A deputation from the East Coast Kailway League interviewed the Hon. E. M'lCenzio, Minister for.Public Works, today. In his reply tho Minister said that the East Coast, lino must bo one of tho linos which'tho country would, have to take in hand before very long. ■ Ho looked upon this line as one-of the most important in New Zealand. The question'of. Native lands should bo dealt with to prevent tho price of tho land being afterwards put up ■ against settlers. Tho Napier-Gisborne section of the line would bo taken in hand probably much sooner than. most of them anticipated, and tho trial survey of it would bo finished as soon as a man was available to do tho work.- ; The Hon. E. M'Kenzio to-day attended a conference at Meeance on the question of river control. Ho said that he did not think that there would be any use sending tho Government engineer to report unless.'the river boards were agreed among themselves, because they would only disagree with any report that might be made. If the boards could not agree on amalgamation some legislative stops might bo necessary, becauso one board could not be allowed to endanger some of the most, valuable country, in the Dominion. ' Mr. M'Kenzie' leaves to-morrow for' Wellington, making a short stay at- Danuevirko en route.
