WELLINGTON LIEDERTAFEL.
■;■' ANNUAL MEETING. Mr. J. W. Joynt (president) presided at the annual- meeting of the Wellington Liedertafol, held at the Oddfellows ■ -Hall, Xambton Quay, last evening. .'; ■ ~ • The annual report stated that at last. -y.e a -rt?if( m fi et i Il .gi !& very grave state, of) affairs had been disclosed, and. members awoke to the fact that i strong measures must be adopted and rigid economy Jf : the 'Liedertafel was to survive. Members had awakened and responded to the call, and they would note that they had been able-to meet all expenses of the sis concerts last year without drawing on subscribers' payments. The' concert at the Hutt left a slight deficiency. Re-' 1 grot was oxpre'ssed for the loss of several of the old subscribers, and the new names did not balance the lessee. This was a, matter that had to be faced if. the Liedercafei '«ra» u. be tarried on on a sound basis. The attendances at practice last year were very; satisfactry, but the same spirit of regularity had not animated so far this season;' and good reliable' voices were needed: ■■ .. . •' .
The receipts for the year, amounted to £20i 10s. 3d:, and the '. expenses to £201 7s. 2d., leaving a small credit of £7 ,35.-Id; The statement of assets and liabilities was not so satisfactory. There.'..was an amount of £97 ss.'for old accounts and £32 15s. for rent, , and conductor's honorarium last year, against assets represented as follows: — Music, £50; outstanding subscriptions, £28: the last balance of £7 3s. Id.; leaving-a shortage of £34 16s. lid. The ~ presentation of the balancesheet was followed by a long discussion as to-the best means of F improving the financial position of the society, and it was resolved that strong appeal be made to members to secure as many new sub-scribers-as possible during the current year.!' - - ■• ' - - ; Li the course i of the meeting Mr. F. V. Waters stated that he had heard the LiedertafelV concerts described -as dull, and he really thought they should go, in for. some brighter ■ and more attractive music. They had been doing some of the glees over and over again, and naturally, the people tired of them. There should be more quartets and trios. • ...
Later, the. secretary suggested that new music could-be added to the library without expense to the. society if members would, present glees ,and other works at their own expense. The hint was taken, half a dozen handing in their names as willing to contribute an appropriate glee or other choral work. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President; Mr. J. W. Joynt; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Macintosh, J. B. Harcourt,-F. V. Waters, F. Grady, J. Stevens, D. Jackson, and A. Gray; hon. conductor, Mr. Robert Parker; hon. secretary, Mr. G. H. Bannister;, hon. treasurer, --Mr. W. D. Gorham; hon. auditor, Mr. C. E. Hawson; hon. librarian, Mr. Geo. Parsons; oommittee, the Rev. A. W. Compton, Messrs. H. Wright and Inman.
