HUTT MAYORALTY.
MR. RUSSELL AT ; ALICETOWN. Mr. W. H..Russell addressed a large meeting, last evening at the. Congregational Churchroom, Alicetown. Mr. J. Cudby. occupied , the chair. ■ . ' In the course of his address; Mt. Russell stated that it was surprising to him that such a place, as Alicetown, which figured in no.small way in the Hutt district,, should have received 'so little attention from the council. The footpaths, he noticed,, were sadly in need of repair, a fact which every resident knew too well—(hear, hear)—and the place had been literally "left in darkness." He favoured the addition of. at least 20 good lamps. In connection with the council there should be a Works Comriiittee ■'. that would make periodical personal inspections, so that every work / might be kept in re- , pair. The suggestion that a suspension bridge should be erected over the river to connect Alicetown with White's Line East was a matter which should be kept in view. It was, in fact, entitled to serious consideration, and he need hardly point out the advantages of- such a scheme, provided that the details were carefully thought put. Most of those present knew his yiews on the question'of: amalgamation with' the Hutt River Board.: He urged this departure emphatically, mainly on the ground of the enormous saving which it would mean to the. borough. Ho then: traversed the River Board's, administration. ■ . '..'■:■■ ■ •
At - the conclusion of the address the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks arid confidence.' . ■■'.■■'..,■■
Mr. Russell, will speak, to-night in the Town Hall,: Lower Hutt. ' ■
