MR. CRAWFORD'S CANDIDATURE
EFFECTIVE-''KEPLX TO CRITICISM,
. Mr. Crawford had'an,excellent meeting last evening in the Druids' Hall, of which the seating accommodation was well filled, with an appreciative audience. Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., was chairman. Mr. Crawford outlined his policy on the lines of previous speeches, and replied in spirited fashion to the criticisms of his opponent. He stated that he was. strongly opposed to' increasing the rates by a single cent, and any schemes that he had suggested must be governed by tho determination that the rates must not be increased. His proposal for shortdated debentures to extend the woodblocking:, of streets was simply the same, thing as when a. man bought a house on the time payment system. ' _ Asked if he''was in'favour of'establishing workers' homes, Mr. Crawford said that the great necessity was cheap homes, arid he did' not see how they , were to be got in Wellington in the way suggested. ,The city could not do these things so cheaply as the individual. Mr. Fisher pointed out that when? the City Council put a proposal for workers 1 homes before the ratepayers, two years ago, the workers did not .vote on it. l -
A vote of thanks and confidence in Mr.- Crawford, was moved, and declared by the chairman to be "seconded in nine places."" The motion was carried unanimously, with applause.
