The blackmailing secret societies of Italy, whose trans-Atlantic branches are generally known in the United States under the namo of "The Black Hand," ordinarily have their home in Southern Italy and Sicily. The Mafia is identified with Sicily, the Camorra with Naples. For many years the Camorra terrorised the Kingdom of Naples. An attempt wasmade by Francis II of Naples to suppress the society, and many of its members were deported, . the remainder joined the Garibaldiane arid were largely instrumental in the expulsion of the' Bourbons in 1867.
