PORK EXPORT TRADE.
. CHINESE CONSIGNMENTS. The substantial.progress made in t|io bacon industry in New South Wales during recent years (says tho Sydney "Herald" of April 11) has given ground among dairymen and farmers generally for the hopo that-tho day is not far distant ;when Australia will be in-a position .to exploit the English and Eastern, trade/ which is at' present almost exclusively dominated by Xianada. In view of this, it is interesting to note that China has lately awakoned to a realisation of the promising .prospects of the pig -industry, not only in tho East, but ill Europe,/and has already taken'stops'tb open up trade with many of the ports lying in proximity to her seas. Last month she extended her scopi; of trade ambition by shipping a cargo, .of. carcasses to London, and a ready sale was accorded the venture. About the same time tho Count Murav/jof, a steel screw steamer, of 40-15 tons, arrived at , Liverpool with 7000 carcasses tff-Chinese pork. It appears that the local health officers of the port made fc thorough examination of the pork, which was found to be in good condition, , and ho objections were raised to its edible qualities. It was, however, reruseti eufcry to tho market,..'is it waa not, cut according io the requirements and: regulations of the Local Government Board. Imported animal meat of any kind.has-to be dressed in a certain way, the object-being to'.facilitate inspection. The c&rcasses in the Chinese consignment had—no doubt. according to national usage—the backbone- reuipved, but on this .account they wero debaned entrance. This objection probably, arose, because the removal of the backbone eheclcs to some extent the experts' opportunities of making a thorough exaniin Hon. The consequence was that, although-; the carcasses were iiot condemned, they were not allowed to he unpacked, and were" 'ultimately transhipped'.to' someVContinerital port, fl'hero less stringent conditions obtain.
