' INVESTMENT SHAKES. The feature in investment share transactions yesterday was the strong upward movement displayed by Taranaki Petroleum shares, which changed hands at 9s. 6d. and lis. Tlio third of the 6erics of London wool sales, usually referred to.as the May sales, will commence on Tuesday of next week, when about 170,000 bales will be catalogued, as compared with 177,500 bales for the corresponding sale of last year. It is difficult to say.what tho market will be like, for we have not had. any, strong features presented recently to civo an . indication. The most recent, quotations for Bradford- tops are as under:— 40's 'at ISd. «'s at 17iri. fiO's common - at 27d. tffa super ....: at 28d. Id's . ....1 at-fflKd. Sine* the close of the March sales. 40'<> and 46's have shown no variation, both grades of We and 64's are hieher by a farthing per lb. The want of movement in crossbredß may not mean anything, at the same time it must be remembered that at the March sales coarse crossbreds were weaker. The direct arrivals are now beginning to be' appreciable, and this must have some bearing on the market. - The "Manchester Guardian," writing just before the commencement of the March sales, says:—The market for all classes of wool and tops at Bradford remains firm, with an upwa,rd tendency. Prices are hbrh, .and. therefore, in the opinion of experienced ' traders, arc dangerous, notwithstanding the very bie' consumption which is going on.. Cautious traders remember . that durine: May. 1908; a top of 40's.quality .could bo bought for. less than Bd., and,.: as a matter of fact' single, transactions, for.: a .thousand packs | at. once took'.place at 7Jd. Then oamd' a''.sudden and salutary .check, and prices rapidly - dropped, to 25d. and less, from which there "has ■ a recovery .; to 261 d. As usual, the very men who were most depressed when prices were at thcii lowest are now tho most confident that they jiro not at the top. Of course, it is all a question of supplies and consumption. • If our estimate of this wool-year's Australian clip.at 2,000,000 bales should prove correct, and all available statistics tend .in that direction, then tho exports of wool from the Commonwealth will have just about doubled since the,- termination of the crest drought. In tho wool-year 1903-4 they amounted to 995,000 bales only. ' ANTWEBP WOOL SALES. Br Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Eec. April 20, 9.25 p.m.) London, April 20.
