Mr. Arthur Dewar, K.C., SolicitorGeneralfor Scotland, has been appointed to. succeed the late Lord M'Laren as a Judge of the Court of Session, Edinburgh. Mr.. TWO NORTHERN LAWYERS. Mr. Arthur Dewar, ILC, is a member of the Scottish. Bar, and also of the oelebrated whisky family. He is the fourth son of Mr. John Dewar, distiller, was born in 1860, and was educated at the Perth Academy and the Univorsity of Edinburgh. He has been in practice as an advocate since 1885, and'in-1909 was appointed Solicitor-General for Scotland. He. has represented South Edinburgh in the Liberal interest since 1908.
The seat which ho vacates, South Edinburgh, has had an interesting history. In 1899 and in 1900 Mr. Dewar tried— and failed—to wrest it from the Unionists, but ho reduced their majority of 831 in 1889 to 111 in 1900. In 1906, the year of the Liberal wave, he returned to the charge with such effect that a Liberal majority of 3800 was hoisted over the Unionist candidate, another K.C. In January last South Edinburgh was one of the Scottish scats that remained true to the Liberals, Mr. Dowar's majority being 2334. The Unionists thus have considerable leeway to make up. Mr. W. Hunter, Liberal M.P. for Govan division of Lanarkshire, and now Solicitor-General for Scotland, is an Ayrshire man, educated at Ayr Academy, and a well-known K.C. with a largo practice at tho Scots Bar. He entered Parliament in January last. Ho was admitted to the Facultv of Advocates in 188 D, and wns made K.C. in 1905.
