THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.l Frank "Porter, who sustained severe injury when Te Arai fell at Kllerslio on March 20, has made good progress towards ■ recovery. On Sunday morning lie was removed from the hospital to his. home at lillerslie. Porter, though now nut of danger, will, however, have to keep his bed for some considerable time, Race meetings will lie held at Timaru and Nelson to-day. Captain is' Hie only northern horse engaged at the Timaru (ixlure, but at Nelson o few Wellingtonowned animals will compete. On account of her winning a hack race San. Lass will be ineligible to compete in the Trial Stakes at Nelson, and her defection will, of course, give the race a more open appearance, though weight of money from Wellington will cause Mr. 11. Whitney's Ahuapai (a veryspeedy (illy) to start favourite. The presence of Wniata and Curator in the Grandstand Handicap should result in a good, race between" the Blenheim and Wellington horses, while Clemain, who showed winning form at Warrengnte when he beat Ambergris, a useful horse, and-' whom R. Lsimbess has journeyed over specially to ride, will be a stern proposition in the concluding event. The black mare Queen of Spades showed such good sprinting ability at the recent C.J.C. meeting when she acted as pilot in tho Easter and Templeton Handicaps for over half o mile that the Timani handic'anper has put Rst. lSlb. on her in the Smithfield Handicap today. The field is a weak one and as Prosser Bros': mare is .such a great beginner, she may prove the' judgment of the weight-adjuster to be correct. H. Donovan will ride her. Red, White and Blue, the half-sister to the Wellington Cup winner Blue Ribbon, will make her first appearance in public' in the Hack Eace at Timaru today. This mare is owned by Mr. J. Buckley, and was. formerly trained at Pprirua, but she developed hock troubles, and was sent home to go to the stud. However, it was intended to again give her a trial nnd, in a letter to J. Prosser . pome time ago, her owner expressed the opinion that she was galloping well, and would soon win a stake. She was nominated at the Dunedin meeting in February, but was not forward enough to run.

Ashby, the chamnioii two-year-old in F. 'Macmancmin's Eller-slie stable, has not quite recovered from the broken knee which he sustained in the spring, ' but he is going on the right way, and his trainer thinks that he will he ready tp place in work for racing about the middle of next season.

The_ Auckland jumper, Scotty, is still running in the paddock, and it may ba that his racing days are over. At any rate he is not likely to figure in any jumping events this winter.

Delegate, a half-brother to the redoubtnble Record Reign, has recently joined 7. ■ Macmnriemin's team' after a prolonged spell in the ■paddock. .He is to be prepared for hurdle racing, and, his first essay will probably bo in the Maiden Hurdles at the winter meeting of the A.R.C. in June. , v

Hahdicappers at times have very different views of the quality of horses. At Hastings next week Mr. H. Coylo has put Magneto in nt'the minimum in the Poulcowa Hack Randican, while at Awapuni last week; Mr. ,T: Henrys handicapped the Trentham mare nt Bst. 31b. in the Woodhcy Hack Handicap.

The Wanganui mare Voca contracted a chill just-; prior, to the Manawatu meeting, and hod to be withdrawn drom her engagements. She is now nearly herself again, but will not bo raced till the -local .meeting, on May 24.

: The Riccarton trainer, H/. .Cutis, will arrive hero on Friday morning on the way to Hastings. He is' bringing with him' four", horses; Iviz.,.' Husbandman, Broadsword, Countermine and another. The quartet will be railed on.by themail train-theVsame day.. . .

Owners of' racing ..stock will have a busy tjmo to-morrow, when entries for several, important meetings aro due, while, at the, sam'e. time, acceptances must he ma'do'for the Hawko's Bay meptirig. ..Tho Wanganui,, Egmont, Christch.ur.cl),'.' and. Takapuna Clubs are those for which nominations. close.

■ The Trentham mare Merrivonia will be an acceptor for the Hawke's Bay "Cup, and will be.railed to Hastings on Jf onday next. C. Jenkins .will ride Mr Ames's marc.

H. Gray will have tho mount on Sea Eagle in her Hastings engagements. Tho Birkenhead' mare lias improved very much since joining A. Ellingliam's 'team, and. she has won her last'three races.

The Awapuni hurdle horseman, H. Telford, was offered two mounts in the Hurdles at'the Timaru meeting, but he was obliged to decline both, owing to his injured collarbone not being sufficiently set' to allow him to ride with safety.

The Great • Northern Steeplechase winner, Capitol, is again in work, and is bowling along freely. He und To Ami are already being spoken of.as likely to be. very forward by the time that the steeplechase season comes round.

The Australian trotter Dan Patch arrive din Auckland on Sunday last, and, on Saturday, he will attempt to cover a mile in 2min. Usee, for a purse of 250 sovs. offered by the Auckland Trotting Club. The trial will take place at Potter's Paddock, but the chances are all against the horse as the track'is' any-, thing but a. fast one.
