TO TALK TO AUCKLAND.
DUPLICATED WIRES. The recent decision of the Government to erect another telegraph wire between Wellington and Auckland is not the ontcome of the recent break in the service caused by tho gale of a fortnight ago. Mr. J. K. Logan, tho Director of Electric Lines, states that tho matter of duplicating the service has beou under consideration for a long time. It has been recognised that another wire was needed in addition to the two telegraph lines by which Wellington now communicateswith Auckland (via Auckland and Utiku and by Napier and Tanpo). These lines converge at Hamilton, and from that point on to Auckland all the wires are carried by one line of Doles.'-'As there are at present twenty wares (in addition to several trunk telephone wires) being carried; by these poles, they may be said to be supporting their full load, if not a little over. For that reason it is proposed to erect another line of poles between Hamilton and Auckland, to carry the new trunk wires and give some measure of relief to the old "fence." . ' The main trunk line from Marfan to Auckland will be the route of the new line, which will be of copper wire (4001b. to , the mile). This is a distance of 310 miles, and will mean the stretching of about 56 tons of copper, wire. Speaking of the havoc played among the wires by the recent gale in the. south, Mr. Logan stated yesterday that everything was quite normal again. Most of the damage had been done by falling trees, which were always the cEef cause of breaks in the wires.
