UNUSUAL STATE OF THE TIDES.
AT HOKIANGA. -. V. ' A somewhat unusnal occurrence is reported to the Marino Department by the harbourmaster at Hokianga'Heads, who telegraphed yesterday that on Saturday afternoon a tremendous eeo. and tide wae running on the bar from no apparent cause. From one Hour before high water to two hours after, the river rose above: highwater mark at the , highest spring tides, immediately receding below' low-water mark. The river continued to rise and fall for over two hours after high water, the highest mark being reached an hour after-high water. The Doatshed, which is over a foot above high-water mark, was filled with water, and the boats were floating about a foot off the roof. This would mean that the water rose over 6ft. above the highest tide mark. No damage was done. ■ •
It would be difficnlt to assign the occurrence to the recent goljs, and the only reason which might be given for the riso in the tide is that some submarine disturbance has taken place. As, against this, however, ao other places report anything out of the ordinary.
