SUNDAY TRAMS.
TRAFFIC DtTBING CHUECH HOTJBS. fßy TelegTapa.—Special Correspondent.) ■" Christchurch, April 18. Tramway traffic during church hours on Sunday mornings has been the cause of frequent complaints by people attending the. churches in closo proximity to the track. At a recent meeting of the board Mr. J. A. Fleshef moved)for a return showing the number of persons travelling on Sunday mornings between 11 and 12.30 during the three months ending March 31 last. At yesterday's meeting a detailed return was submitted showing that 8700 cash passengers had travelled by the trams mentioned, and it was estimated that another 3650 users of concession. tickets also travelled. Mr. Flesher said that he did not want the 12.30 cars to be included in the return. They took the people home from church. -What he deeired was a return of passengers travelling during church hours. It was a question whether the traffic paid • the board. l Mr. Staples contended that it was not entirely a question.of cost. It was the convenience of the public which had to be considered. . Mr. C. M. Gray said that even if the .trams were stopped during church hours the men would have to wait and their pay would be going on. The board could not. inconvenience fifty; or sixty thousand people during the year because one or two churches happened to be on the tram route. The board should, however, do what it could to minimise the alleged nui£ance. ' i 1 it seemed remarkable to him that Chnstelmrch should he the only centre in New Zealand which required trains at the horns specified. \ e , n 4, noHand did not run them then. '..Mr. Bearen said that bis recollection of the Auckland practice was different to Mr. Flesher's. No action was taken. ,
