LASCARS ON STEAMERS.
IN NEW ZEALAND WATERS. (By Teleenph-Fress Association.) Auokland, April IS. The Auckland Sailors' Union is telegraphing to the Prime Minister and to Mr.' l< isher, tho prospective Federal Premier, asking them to legislate against the employment of cheap coloured labour, on a steamer trading between Australia and New Zealand This is directed against tho P. and 0 Company, which, it is stated, pays Lascais 255; a! month against £7 to seamen and £9 to' stokers paid by the Union Company and the Huddart-Par-ker Company, with' which it is in direct competition. . . ■ ■ , ■ .
Tlio Morea, which loft hore for Sydney on Wednesday, carried 200 passengers, who would otherwise- have travelled by the ordinary intercolonial steamera. If it is impossible to secure increased wages, the Legislature will bo asked to differentiate in tho matter of light and port dues in favour of companies paying Dominion wages.
