HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(from Oar Special Correspondent.) —0— A meeting held in the Sydney Street nail, ketone, Jast evening,, for the purpose of forming a Hutt Valley Golf Uub, was not largely attended. Howt ever, several names of local enthusiasts' were handed to the chairman (Mr. 11. C. Kirk), intimating willingness to play, and players from Wellington and Hutt have also intimated their intention to join. It was resolved to hold a meeting at Liower Hutt on Monday evening with a view to furthering the proposal.

The monthly meeting of the. Petone School Committee was held' last evening, Present: Messrs M'Kenzie(chairman), Abrahall, Rev. A. Thompson, Hill, Cairns, iJurd. M'Dougal, list, and Rev. J. D. Russell. The headmaster (Mr. Forster) in his report stated that during the past month the attendance in the primary department had increased by seven, whilst, in the secondary department, a decrease of three was shown. The quarterly returns showed that, at the end of last December, the attendance of primary scholars was 622. Of the» 68 discontinued after Christmas, bo that the actual atteadance at the end of 1909 was 554. ;■ One hundred and seven scholars were admittetd during the year, x and 41 withdrawn. The totil liumhor on the roll at the end of March was 620, and the average half-daily attendance 560. In the secondary department last De» . comber the roil number was 19 01 'these 13 did not v attend after the Christmas, so that the ■. actual attendance at the end of 1909 was 36. The total number on the roll at the end of March this year was 78, and the average half-daily attendance 74. The secretary presented' the annual report, whioh congratulated the committee on the satisfactory state of the past year's work and the finances, the year finishing with a credit balance, of £13 11s. During the year £7 10s. had been expended on library hooks and improve-, monts to the grounds. The report paid a tribute to Mr. Home, the late headmaster. The caretaker was granted a bonus.of £4 10s.
