SALVATION ARMY WORK.
NEW BUILDING AT AUCKLAND. (By TeleEraDh.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, April 15. The shelter for men which the Salvation Army , 'is about to erect on the ground acquired by the-Army authorities at the corner o£ Lome' and St. Paul's Streets, will contain , several new interesting features. One will bo a ward for tho accommodation" of men under the influence of ''liquor. The shelter will bo a three-etdry' building, in' brick and concrete, .and the land and. structure together will cost £6000. Of this sum £2500 is provided undor the will of the lato Mrs. Knox. On the top floor a special ward will be provided as a.memorial to. , the late Mrs. Knox. The beds in this ward will be absolutely free.. The new building will accommodate 130, as against 74—the capacity of the present, shelter. It is intended ultimately to replace the present "People's Palace" by anup-to-date structure ■ on the lines of the Wellington establishment. The £500 left by the late Mrs. Knox t«the Prison Gate Home is being applied.to renovating and painting the building, and erecting a house for the officers.. This will allow tho whole building to be used solely for the accommodation of .inmates, and it will' be possible to take 16 or 18 more. The officials are much hampered for want.of room, and men are sleeping in all sorts of odd corners, while some applicants have had to be turned away.
