OUR MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS.

Sir,—ln a press' interview in this part of the Dominion the • Hon. Roderick MlCenzie made the following surprising statement:—"Taking a period of 20 years, from 1891 to .date, it will be Been that the railway votes spent in the North Island total ;i3,903;91G, as' against .£3,058:091 in the South Island.'-' '• ; . ' Where Mr! H'Kenzie gets his figures from I do not-know, but certainly not from the public records. His .£3,904,000, ■I presume, includes tho -£1,0(10,000 paid for the Wellington-Manawatu line.' But what advantage-is that to the. North? None-whatever, • for wo shall-have to pay by far the:'largest;share of " the"'.£4o,ooo per annum interest--.on the purchase money and get nothing whatever in roturn.

• But the period from 1891 to 1909 is not 20 years, as our Minister for Publics Works states, but is 18 years only, and the sum spent on our railways during the last 20 years was £14,177,245, and not £6,962,007, as -he says it is. Mr. ATEenzie is. only £7,215,238 out in. his figures. In other words, more than- twice the amount was spent on! our railways than he says there was; ttnd this is our Minister for Public Works.—l'am, etc., "■' ' • 'SAMUEL VAILE. Auckland, April 12, 1910.'; '
