"LAITANCE."

. BELIEVED TO BE CUBED. EXPEEUIENTS AT. THE DOCK. A fortnight ago it was stated in these columns that a big experiment, the last of many, was being made at the dock site at Te Aro to overcome the 'laitance" trouble in connection with ,the layins_of concrete for the floor of the dock.- The ; trouble has been that the concrete mixed according to specifications would hot setin the depth of water (between 40ft. and 50ft.) in the dock basin. Some three .. weeks ago a patch of about 145 cubic feet of concrete was laid down, three bags of cement per yard of gravel and sand, being used instead of the usual two, and several of those interested had , high hopes that this would have a solidifying effect. That was not all that was done. It was pointed out us a pos-: sible- contingency that in .the journey along the tramline from the big mixer, to the spot where the concrete was to'be': deposited the bigger, stones would, with.. ; the ! assistance of the vibration, have an opportunity to settle to the bottom, and so make the lower half of the boxful of concrete of a looser consistency than the top. To obviate this, the concrete was turned over again" immediately before being'deposited in position. '- On Wednesday; Messrs. John M"Xean ' and Sons' diver removed - the ■ "leaves": '■■ (i.e.;'the; boards placed in -position to ' keep the'wet concrete" in position); and ?.' yesterday Diver Mnlayson,' of the Har- .' bour Board's staff, made an inspection of the patch.. It is believed that his report • is favourable. Mr.- James Marchant, engineer to the board; was communicated .i with' yesterday, but said he was not pre- ' pared to say anything just , yet as to the - result of the latest experiment.' It is ' ■probable that Mr. Mlntosh, the engineer.representing the board at the ■ dock, will don the diving dress himself this morning, and make an exhaustive inspection of the concrete. The result of his sub-~ knarine excursion will be awaited .with Oβ little interest. ,
