DEFEAT OP NEW ZEALAND " CHAMPION. ■■' The annual carnival of the Royal Wood-chopping, Sawing, and Axemen's Association of New South' Wales . was held at the Agricultural Society's Grounds last week. In regard to the fixture, the'"Referee" remarks that possibly at no previous carnival under the same auspices has there been such a representative gathering of wood-choppers. They came from. Victoria, from Tasmania, from land, and even from New Zealand. Charles -Miley, of Victoria, was the central figure, and he certainly has the best claim of any man in the Commonwealth to the distinction of Champion Axeman of Australasia, particularly now that J. W. Heckenberg is on the retired list.. Heavily handicapped, . Milcy acicounted for all comers .in the Inter-State Cup competition and the Now SouthWales Axemen's Cup also passed into his possession. Yet no more than 28 years old, Miley has already 'figured in the forefront of Victorian, New Zealand, and Tasmanian wood-chopping. Novcooler or more effective demolisher of the upstanding and the lying log has been seen in .these parts. He went to work in such an off-hand manner that he never I troubled about removing his boxer hat whilo chopping) through, the big handicap; ■ . . ' Sam , Johnson, Maoriland's champion, who defeated Miley for the New Zealand Cup, was also present, giving the Victorian an opportunity to turn the tables, which ho did, while allowing Sam ssec. at a log 18 inches in diameter. ■' It was. a great, battle, the contest for the Interstate Cup. Miley only won by two chops from 11. M'Doiiald (25sec); whom the New South Wales Association now Tecoirnises as its champion,- and who, 'tis said, was caught a good deal out of condition, but that was his own fault, if the statement he true.
