THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(Br Glencob.) The second day of the Avondale meeting will be held on' Wednesday. Local sporting enthusiasts will have the Manawatu meeting to engage their attention on Wednesday and Thursday next. The principal item will be the Manawatu Stakes, which is run on the first day. A high-class field will face the starter, and the race should be more interesting than was expected, as the penalties incurred by Fonnby .will bring him back to the others. The field is likely to consist of Inspection, Madam, Madcap, Danube, Polymorphous, Lord Kelvin, Formby, Penates, King Sonlt, and Vice Admiral. The* last-named colt, who is owned by Messrs. Stead Brothers, will have a host of supporters, as he recently defeated Danube in a gallop at Trentham when conceding the Welcome Stakes winner a big slice of weight. Stall the public performances of Formby have been really Sigh class, and he is such a brilliant beginner he will have a lot in his favom. His pilot, F. D. Jones, remained behind in Wellington to reduce his weight down to the required Bst. lib., and will ]om the team at Awapuni to-day.
' Jockeys A. Oli7er, B. Lowe, S. Beid, and L. Wilson were passengers by the mail train for Palmerson North yesterday. The first-named has a ride in every, race except the hurdles on the first day, Lowe will ride Parula in the Telegraph Handicap, and Keid will have a mount on Bourrasqne in the TaiSorea Welter. The Auckland horseman,.A.-Julian, rer turned north yesterday, and will 'be riding at the Avondale meeting to-morrow. His two chief mounts -will be Luscombe and Cavalierio, Succession: looked very light-when rao: ing at Trentham on Saturday, and her owner has'decided to turn her out for a six months' spell. ■ The "Chokebore-owned Tenterhook and Husbandman were shipped south by the Maori last night. The remaining members' of the Trentham team, along with Madam Madcap, who was Bent up from Kiccarton were railed to Awapuni on Saturday last. • • ■'' ../ It was the intention of Trainer E. Cutts to turn Madam Madcap out. for a long spell after the C.J.C. Easter meeting, but while at "Trentham Sir George Clilford telegraphed to Riccarton for the' Middle Park Plate 1 winner to be shipped north to contest the Manawatu Stakes. H. Cutts.went to.the boat on Saturday, took charge of the filly, and railed her to Palmerston North the same day. Jockey W. Toung applied to tbe Wanganui Jockey Club last week for the restoration of his license, but the committee could , not see its way clear to grant the request. ...
The Karamu crack' : two-year-old i''ormby is engaged in the next A.J.C. Derby, and it is to bo hoped that he will be sent over to contest the blue ribband event, as there is no doubt that he is a colt of exceptional ability.
Horses owned by the Wairarapa sportsman, Mr. W. Halley, have been running most prominently of late, but with bad luck. Hilarian: was twice left at the po6t at the recent, Trentham meeting, while Leahora, who started three times, finished fourth once, and second twice, and when San Lass defeated her in the Muritai Handicap, there was only a head between them. This is unprofitable rac--ing, as the horses go up in'the weights, while'there is no "pecuniary gain.
To-day the racehorses' Eina, Te Kahurangi, and Taitoko will be railed to Levin, where they are to be turned out. on their owner's property, and -when-next the trio race they will figure on the race-card as geldings. The first-named showed promise early, but he. has never run iip to it in racevTe Kahurangi! has been lame oil and off since October last, and Taitoko 'brbke-J'doivri ,badly;: when, galloping at Trentham"last week. , ' '■■■'. ...' North Bast was inclined to be frac, tious at the barrier on Saturday,,and his rider had to'keep Temihding him of what was expected of him. It may ibe that the racing under big weights that the Euroclydon gelding has been getting lately may be turning him sour, but he will have a few days in which to freshen up before he races at Awapnni,' and as a short spell generally works wonders in him, he. may strip at his best on Wednesday. ' ' ■' ' . The'■ apprentice L. Traill, • who rode three winners at Trontham, is located at Porirua. He has a good seat on a horse, but; is not vigorous enough in a finish, and, like all apprentices, is-sadly lacking in generalship. ■ . . .: The Auckland light-weight jockey,. A. Whittaker, who recently rode all , , the winners at the Huntly meeting, has had a long, run of lnck at the northern country meetings, and has already ridden over forty winners.. i '.. .
■ The well-faiown Hastings trainer, J.. M. Cameron, who has been located at Caulfield for the past fifteen months, is exacted to arrive here'on a flying visit on Wednesday by the TJlimaroa. Cameron has been fairly successful since leaving New Zealand, ■ and has won a few races with' Seatondale and Seraphic, both of whom could only 'be placed to win with great' difficulty; At the A.J.C. meeting just concluded horses trained by the New Zealander won both steeplechases. The aged Castor gelding Kiatere proved successful in the first event, with Bullworth second, and on the last day, with Kiatere out of the way, Bnllworth was enabled to : beat the remainder , of the field. The hurdle mare Lady Patricia is highly spoken of in Auckland, and itisstated that" she will not be raced again until, tho Great Northern Hurdle weights are made known.. E«oently she has quitted the stables of W. Mobberley, and is now trained by J. Malcolm, at Epsom. The champion Bobrikoff, who arrives from Sydney by the TJlimaroa on Wednesday, will go'into winter quarters on his owner's station, and will not be taken up again until July, when he will be prepared for another desoeht on Eandwick in the spring. . ', The ex-New Zealand horse Aborigine, wlo last year dead-heated in the Caulfield Cup, and subsequently won the Phoenix Handicap at Moonee Valley, is again in work at Eandwick under the care of.H. Eayner. , Prince Foote's record to date is fifteen starts ajid ten wins. His first appearance in public was at Moorefield in March last year. . .
