SMALLPOX.
ANOTHER CASE IN QUARANTINE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright; (Rec. April. 11, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, April 10. Tho mother of a newly-born child has developed smallpox in the quarantine station. '..-"' ' In view of the cases of smallpox reported from Sydney among the Ofcway's passengers, the health authorities in Auckland (writes our special correspondent) are fully alive to tne advisability of taking extra- precautions to sea that the disease finds no admittance to New Zealand by way of this port._ Dr. Sharman, pdrt health officer, is making, a special inspection of the passengere arriving by the Sydney steamers from to-day. Dr. Sharman, having had experience of smallpox .epidemics in the Old Country, * is confident that he would at once, detect it in anyone infected, and he would, if necessary, take prompt steps to deal with an emergency. As a matter of. fact, he considers that smallpox is very , unlikely to spread in New Zealand, and anticipates no danger to residents.in the Dominion from the existence of the few cases in Australia. _ At the same time, he realises tho desirability of taking extra precautionary measures- at the present juncture. There'• is-'thorefore no- occasion for the creation of a "scare." :
