OUR NEW GOVERNOR
« A BARONET. SIR JOHN DICKSON-POYNDER.D.S.O. A POLITICAL AND MILITARY CAREER. The Prime Minister, .Sir J. G. Ward, has received, throngh his Excellency the Governor, Lord Plunkot, tho following cablegram from tho Secretary of State' for the Colonies:— "His Majesty tho King has been graciously pleased to approve tho appointment of Sir John DicksonPoynder, Bart., 8.5.0., to be Governor of tho Dominion of Now Zealand, in succession to Lord Plunkot, K.0.M.G., K.0.V.0. "Hjs Majesty the King lias been ■graciously pleased to approvo of tho promotion of Lord Plunket, K.C.M.G., K.C.V10., Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, to be a Knight Grand Cross of the . Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George." . Sir John Dickson-Poynder, D.S.O.j is the sixth baronet (tho title was created in 1802). Ho was born in 1866, and educated at Harrow and Oxford (Christ Church); In 1881 ho assumed the namo of Poyndor on succeeding to his maternal Uncle's estates. In 1896 he married Anne, daughter of Mr. R. H. D r Dundas, whoso vriSe was a sister of Baron Napier of Magdala. The now Governor has seen a distinguished service in tho army. He was a subaltern officer- in the 3rd Royal Scots Guards,' and served in South Africa with the Wiltshire Yeomanry, as major, in 1900 (Queen's Medal, three clasps), receiving, the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry in the field. • In- politics, Sir John Dicksoa-Poyn-dor was formerly conservative in his views; latterly he has been with tho Liberals'. He lias represented the Chippenham division of Wiltshire- in the House of Commons since 1892. He is a very wealthy mm!, and Las only one child, a daughter. Tho following is a sketch of the now Governor written from the Unionist point of view:— "Sir John Poynder Dickson-Poynder (nee Dickson) is ono of thoso 'verts who drifted over to Radicalism. Only six' years ago ho ceased io ; bo a Moderate representative of St. Georgd's, Hanover Square, at Spring Gardens. He is a Wiltshire squire, with places both at Corsham and at Hilmorton, Calno. Tho latter belonged to his mother's family, and, as heir to his mother's estate, he adopted his maternal grandfather's name, adding to it the baronetcy whichho inherited from his undo, Captain Sir Alexander Collingwood Thomas Dickson, R.N., in 1884. His father also was a sailor,' and a rear-admiral. He was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, and is;a J.P. for Wiltshire. Ho was formerly a lieutenant in tho 3rd Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), and major in the Wiltshire Yeomanry, and is an hon. lieutenant in the Army. Ho went out to South Africa with tho Yeomanry, gained his D.5.0., and won his election laßt time in his absence.
