The annual'report stated, inter alia r that- the' year. just ended .'was commenced with a-, membership of 36, of whom 31 r were activo and five honorary. Sixteen, active* and five honorary -members' jbined'during the year, and the present, .number, of, financial members ; was 34, of whom 27.were l active: and .- seven ionorary. ' Six active and one honorary member .were; "classed ,as "good,'but in arrear.". ;The new;to'urnament. trophy donated '•by.■'. the ■'president (Mr ■ Petherick) took the forni of » silver castle resting on a polished franite base, and 'surmounted , by. a aight.;; It was contained', in a: hand6ome.,casej; and would be a very snitable. permanent trophy : for the club.' In-common with, chess piayers all over the Dominion, the club was indebted to Mr;Petherick for the initiation of a distinctive chess badge, nnd a supply of the'badges, which take the form of a : small ..silver, knight for-attachment, to the coat.;. The permanent Petherick trophy .was'. "first won'by Mr. W' .E. Mason; at the last tournament, who also won a club championship tourney. After an.interval of 13',yea'rs; a" telegraphic match was played with the Otago Chess Club, and was won by by seven games to five. At th.e ( New Zealand: Chess - Tournament, at Auckland, .last Christmas, the club was .worthily, represented .' by 'Messrs John -Mason and; H'.;.;L. James.' The foijner. won the championship of the Dominion, \ while Mr. James tied for fifthprize and, won the... brilliancy •prize.-,.- Three other' membera of the club .attended as representatives ofother clubs,; The club was again indebt«d_to Mr: John Mason for a handsome framed photograph, of the competitors' at-the.
