THE SCULLING CHAMPION.
AENST AND HIS SUPPORTERS., Dr. Thacker, who is one of Richard Arnst's supporters, will be present at the big contest on the Zambesi this year. He told a Christchurch reporter that Ariist, just before leaving Christchurch to go on board the Moeraki, on his way to Australia, stated that he was looking forward to the best trip of his life, and was in high spirits at the prospects before him. Arnst will leave Australia in the Medic in May, and will'go to Capo Town. From there he will take train to Buluwayo, which is the centre of sport in that part of South Africa. He will then continue his. journey to Livingstone, which is on the Zainbesi, at the Zambesi Falls. There he will probably go into camp with Floyd, who will be his trainer, supervisor and manager. Arnst's other supporters, Mr'. J. H. Parker, Mr. R. H. Rhodes, M.P., and Mr. J. F. Buchanan, have as much confidence in Floyd's fitness for the , position as Dr.' Thacker has. Jack Arnst will be the champion's pacer and assistant trainer. When the supporters selected Floyd, they asked Arnst if he would be acceptable, and he replied that he would rather have Floyd than anyone else. Floyd will be in communication with the supporters in Christchurch, Who will he kept acquainted with tho progress of Arnst's training. Dr. Thacker will probably leave Christchurch in June. He intends to go through Basuto Land, the Orange River Colony, tho Transvaal, Matabele Land, and Rhodesia. ■
Dr. Thaoker has made many inquiries in regard to the course on which the race will be rowed. Livingstone, be says, is about 3000 ft. or 4000 ft. above sea level, and has a pleasant climate.: Thereare no crocodiles in-the part of the-river which will be used for the race, so that even if the New Zealander experiences a few capsizes ho is not likely to make food for these reptiles. There is very little fever in the district, and the atmosphere is dry and healthy. In'any case, Arnst wil] be under medical, supervision all the time, and all kinds of. precautions will be taken to preserve him from mosquitos and other dangers that may lessen his chances of winning agamst Barry. It is expected that'the race will be watched by great crowds of spectators, as the Falls attract large numbers of well-to-do tourists, and the site is in fairly easy reach of those who wish to see good rowing. Dr. Thacker will probably be accompanied on his visit to South Africa by Mrs. Thacker, Mr. J. H. Parker and Mr. C. B. Thacker. (By Teleeraph-PreßS Association.) : Christchurch, April 9. Arnst's supporters have asked' Harry Floyd to accompany the champion to South Africa to supervise the training. Floyd will probably make the trip. Jack Arnst will be assistant trainer. Arrangements have still to' be made for' a pacer. Dr. Thacker and Sir. J. H. Parker will probably go from '■■ Christchurch to see the raoe.
