(Prom Our Special Correspondent) . <j . Tlie Hutt and Potono effort to supplement the funds of a Jubilee Orphanngo proved to bo a great success yesterday. A procession of members of all friendly societies in the Hutt Valley, headed by both local bauds, marched from the railway station to tho Petono Recreation Ground, whom a largo crowd had assembled. Tho Mayor of Potone, Mr. J. W. M'Kwan, briefly addressed the crowd, hoping that the movement would bo a sucocss. Mr. Kershaw, a prominent officer of the Manchester Unity Lodge, outlined tho position of the movement, pointing out that a start had been, made to gather funds for tho proposed orphanago as far back as 1888, when at a similar gathering £250 had been collected. Since then, however, the fund, with interest and compouud interest, had increased to £700, ar "1 as thore_ was yet a great deal of money required ho hoped that the public would support the proposal. Mr. E. P. Bunny, who also spoke, expressed pleasure at the largo gathering assembled, and wished the movement every success. Mr. T. M. Wilford said that after Mr. Kershaw had explained the position so : accurately there was little to bo said, except perhaps that tho. movement was a noblo one, and he wished it the success it so richly deserved. During the afternoon selections were rendered by both bands. It is understood that the friendly societies, of Wellington will hold a demonstration at an early date to further increase the fund. • ;

At 0.15 on Sunday morning a fivoroomed house, No. 1 Tory Street, Po-, tone, was totally destroyed by fire. The brigade were summoned quickly, and prevented the fire spreading to adjoining dwellings. Tho house was occupie'd by Matthew Babick, and was owned by Mr. M'Ewen. No theory is offered as to how the fire originated. The furniture was insured in the Bun office for £125. and the building in the London and Globe for £200.

The annual inter-club cricket match between the .Petone and Wellington Working Men's Clubs wa3"played at Petone last Saturday afternoon. Petone batted first and compiled 79, Hey being top scorer. Wellington quickly reached this total with: the loss of three wickets (Mahouey 50). thus winning by seven wickets,. Maboriey, who was mowing down wickets liko grass before a scythe, did the "hat trick." In'the evening the visitors were entertained at. the Empire Hotel.

The congregations, at the Salvation Army's harvest festival at Petono yesterday were large, and the subjects taken by Adjutant Gardner were well handled. The morning text was: "The harvest is great and tho labourers are few." Tho afternoon was a service of thanksgiving and praiso. The : choir rendered two suitable and.very pleasing numbers, and the brass band rendered very sweetly a harvest melody. At the evening service, "Harvest Home," the speakers dealt; eloquently with their subject. The chief speaker was Adjutant Gardner, of Auckland, who gave an : eloquent and convincing address on "The : Rich \ Fool Pulling Down his Barns to. make more Room." The building was very artistically decorated. The festival continues tho week till .Thursday evening/ ; " ' \

At tho conclusion of. his address to tho ratepayers- at'tho Lower Hutt Town Hall on ; Friday evening, Mr. E. P. Bunny, who seeks re-election as Mayor, was accorded a vote of confidence, on the motion of Mr. .Robert Stqvena. .
