NATIONAL DEFENCE.

. LORD KITCHENER'S SCHEME. The, public committee for universal .military • training held a meeting last evening, Mr. A. R. Atkinson being in the chair. On. the motion of Mr. P. C: Freeth, seconded by Mr. S. A. Atkinson, the following resolution was carried unanimously:— "(1) That, in the opinion of- this oommittee, there is a widespread and .deep-rooted determination on the''part of the people of the Dominion to-do all that, is reasonably required, both in the way of expenditure of money and of personal training,'for the defence'of the country.

'' (2) That the futility of half measures has_ been amply demonstrated by the admitted weakness of our present defence system, and that the only course consistent with the safety and'credit of the country is to carry out, without modification, the recommendations of the distinguished military authority whose advice has been sought: (8) The committee accordingly assures the Government of its hearty ; support in their \adoption of' Lord Kitchener's scheme in its entirety, especially as regards the increase .in the age for compulsory training to .'twenty-six; and ,jt is satisfied that they can rely upon the patriotism of the "country to respond loyally to the call."
