IFrorn Our Special Correspondent.) ; ♦ — MEETING OF THE RIVER BOARD. The monthly meeting of tho Hutt River Board was held last night,.air. it. Stevens presiding. The overseer's report stated that tho logs and suags causing troublo in tho river channel had been removed; that the crossings of stop banks had been repaired, and general repairing work seen to. Consideration of the report was held over till next meeting. Correspondence'referring to a rata log left on the river was the cause of some • - discussion. Eventually it was decided on tho chairman's motion, to see that it was removed. Iu connection with the reading of. tho annual report by tho engineer, Mr. 0. Stevens pointed oiit that it was of little- use to expect members to pass it that night.. Each member should \havo a copy at least a week beforehand. The chairman ruled that the report should be read, but agreed with Mr. Stevens's suggestion. It was decided to supply copies of it to each member. It was agreed that the board's staff reinstate the banks washed out, and charge the same to Mr. Pitcaithly. , The chairman explained that an accident prevented Mv.Pinney from attending the meeting, and he understood that Mr. Peterkin would bring up tho notice of motion that Mr. Piuney intended to. The notice was then given by Mr. Peterkin as follows':—"That in the opinion of this board the time has arrived when, in tho interests of the ratepayers of tho borough, tho functions of the Hutt River Board should be. vested in the Lower Hutt Borough Council."

GOOD TEMPLARS. The usual weekly session of the Hope of Pptone Lodge of Good Templars was held in the Ranfurly Hall last night, Bro. W. Denby, C.T., presiding over a very large gathering. The District Lodge Executive officially attended, and took the chairs. Bro. Coulter, D.C.T., presiding. Rev. A, J. Seamer was initiated. After business Bro. Read, D. Sec., took the chair, and a debate with the Pioneer Lodge, Wellington,, took place. The subject was: "State Legislation r. Moral Suasion." Bros. Seamer, Townsend, and Deriby (Petone) spoke in favour of State legislation, and Bro.' A. B. Thompson (Grand Cr.), Hampton, and Coulter for Moral Suasion. The contest resulted in a win for State legislation..

BENEFIT SOCIETY. _ The second annual meeting of the Petone Railway Workshops Sick Benefit Society was held in the Oddfellows' Hall ■■last evening. There was a good attendance. The report and balancesheet was adopted. The society started the year with 107 members, tho number being increased by 28-by'the end of the year. Twenty-four members were in l-eceipt of the sick and accident pay during the year. The year's receipts totalled £238 7s. Id., and. the expenditure £107 Us. Bd.y leaving a balance of £127 15s. 5d., to be divided as follows:—10s. per member to be placed to the reserve fund, and thebalance to be divided at tho rate of lis. lOd. per member. Of the remaining money £50 is invested in-the Post Umce Savmgs Bank and £77 15s. sd. on. current account in the Bank of New Zealand. The following. officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. H. Rowe; ; vice-presidents', Messrs. Moore; ■ Horne, and Beatty: iwn. sec, Mr;-H. Johnston; treasurer, Mr. Hutchinson; auditors, Messrs R Moore and W. Parsonson; committee! Messrs. J. Croft, J. Moss, R ; Cruicfcshank, J. Kennedy, J. M'Carthy, H. 'Turner, A. Bailey, J, M'Donald, and ■A. iU Millan. A notice of motion was handed m to increase.the treasurer's salary. .
