TO KARORI.
; ''" SHORTER ROUTE DESIRED. At last evening's meeting of the City Council,'.'-Conncillor- Fitzgerald .reballed: the fact that, ; some' time (ago, a deputation'had waited upon the council to make inquiries 1 regarding'a shorter route to Karori; The result of the representation of those ratepayers had been' a promise that the City Engineer would bring down a report as to the best means of ' establishing . a shorter route to the suburb. He wished: to know when' the report might be expected. The Mayor (Dr. Newman) replied that the drawing up of a report by the engineer had been postponed, for the reason that the Government had made suggestions for a new road, 66ft. wide, up from Boweri Street. Part of Sydney Street would then be closed.'.' The engineer had interviewed the Prime Minister on the matter, and a,reply was expected any day. The engineer could not Teport until the result of these ne-, gotiations became known. He'considered that a route straight up Bowen Street would be the best possible road to Karori, much better than Hill Street or any other existing thoroughfare. Councillor Fitzgerald: How about Kelburne? . " ' ' The Mayor: It would shorten the way to Kelburne, too. " , ' _ Councillor : Fitzgerald said that the - idea of the deputation' was that (1) a tunnel should be built, (2) that the Kelburne tramway*should be extended,' or (S) that the Sydney Street routs" should be considered; He understood that the engineer was to report on thebest route of those three. '
The Mayor:" It is a question which ought not. to.be settled until we get a reply from Sir Joseph Ward. There can hardly be any question about it. 1 think the tramway should go np that way. '
