SYMPTOMS OF MANIA.
A DESTRUCTIVE TURN. YOUNG MAN CAUSES TROUBLE. (By Telegraph.-Press Association ', Chrlstchurch, April 7. A young man,: about 24, who had come over from Kumara with ■.. his brother on a holiday trip for the benefit of his health, developed symptoms of mania early this morning. He climbed over the iron gate of the hotel where he was staying, and ran. up Manchester Street. His mania took a destructive turn, and he smashed the window of a fruit shop, and then sliattered the big plate-glass window of a boot shop. Next he climbed over a wire shutter into the vestibule of another, shop, and' threw; various automatic machines into the street. The constable on the beat, with the aid of a couple of civilians, secured him, and' put him in a cab. He gave.the constable a .bad time on the way to the police station, where he was placed in a padded cell. -As soon as the door was shut he commenced on .the padding of the' walls, and before he could be got under control he had torn down yards of thick leather, and heaped thei pad l ding on the floor. Ultimately he had to' be placed in a strait jacket. He then lapsed into a comatose condition, which suggested serious. brain injury of some' kind. Later on he was removed | to Sunnyside Mental Hospital.
