THE GAME REGULATIONS.
MINISTER'S METHODS CRITICISED. IBy Telesraph— Special CorresDondent.l Christchurch, April G. Tho Hon, Mr. Buddo's metliods of dealing with tho game regulations do not appear to give unalloyed satisfaction; At the meeting of tho Rod and Gun Club last evening, tho chairman (Dr. Anderson), referring to a statement made by another member, "that tho Government took very little notice of the recommendations of tho Acclimatisation Council," said this had been exemplified in connection with the llakaia deer herd. It was difficult to estimate with absolute accuracy how many deer there were, but ho had made a calculation which nfforded a working basis. Roughly speaking, ho estimated that there were 380 deer of all sexes and ages up the Rakaia. though tho chances were that 300 would' be much nearer the mark. Tho total included 31 stags, which would be six years old and upwards. The council of the society recommended the Minister that twelve licenses should bff granted, Die holders to bo entitled to shoot two stags each, so that there would be some good old stags left. The Minister, however, decided to issue 11 licenses to shoot 28 stags, a thing which was preposterous. He would like to see the herd .with more than ten good representative stags. There was evidence that they should go slow for the first few years, and afterwards increase the number of licenses in each successive year. ' It was a pity that the Minister had not worked out things before issuing fourteen licenses.
