HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) : 0— The monthly meeting of tlie managers of the Petone Technical School Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Rev. A. Thomson (chairman), Messrs. J. G. Castle (secretary), Duncan Baldwin, M'Kenzie, Jones, Findlay, Southgate, Ramsdeu, and Trueman. Tho director (Mr. J. H. Lynskey) reported that tie number of pupils in the various classes was as folloiss:—Continu'ation class: English, 16; arithmetic, 17; bookkeeping, 12;' shorthand, typewriting, and correspondence, 21; carpentry, 5; architectural 'drawing, 8; dressmaking, 5; machine construction, 6; art drawing, 1 paying pupil and 11 scholarship pupils; electricitß; and . plumbing, 15. Jlr. Jl'Kenzie drew the board's attention to tlie fact that in connection with the scholarships for drawing, the primary department had no scholarships allotted to them.. All the scholarships for the District High School had been allotted to the secondary department, and'tho pupils in tho sixth standard of the District High School had not tho same advantage as those pupils attending the Petone West School. Jlr. Castle said he quite agreed with Jlr. M'Kenzie, and moved that three more scholarships be given to the' primary department of tho Petone' District High School, two more to the Hutt High School, and two scholarships to the Epuni, Taita, and' Koro ICoro Schools. This was seconded by Mr. M'Kenzie, and carried. The director also reported that ten students had. joined the matriculation class. It was resolved, on the motion of/the chairinaji, that the class, bo recognised on the'same basis as all'the other classes. , '

On the Lower Hutt 1 bowling green, m the championship . pairs,. Leymour and Macaskill (15) defeated Johnston and Davidson (14). . The game .was very eve.n all through, and excited much interest. The semi-finals for the , president's medals were also played. • Buckingham (22) defeated Cudby (21), M'Guiro (20) defeated Buckingham (10).

At the 'meeting of the Hutt Park Committee the members'.- present were:— Messrs. Baldwin (chairman), Barlow,Macaskill, Southgate, and .Dr. M'Kenzie. A ■ letter niis received from tho Cadet Office, stating that after the recent en.campment a certain section of. cadets were detailed to clear thir park.' Tho chairman said that lie had inspected the park, and it certainly was in'a bad state. The secretary announced that since' tho letter had "come to ■•hand,:.-Major Macdonald had made an offer of 414 10s. in full settlement of the claim. It was decidod to; accept the. offer. A cheque for 47 10s. was received .from tho D Battery' foT damage done whilst they were In camp at tho park. Mr. J. Gardner applied for use of the park for golf purposes, .offering 410 per year for rental, and pointing out that it was proposed to start a Hutt and Petone Golf Cliib. Mr. Macaskill, in supporting tho application, said ho ■felt sure' that if the committee granted this request a membership of 40 to 50 could be relied upon. It was resolved to grant the use of the park for one year. St. Augustine's Football Club .were granted a ground for the sum of 42 2s. for the season.

'■ At a meeting of the. Petone Ambulance 'Wagon Fund Committee, - held in the Mayor's room, Sir. J. W. M'Ewan pre--sided. Accounts amounting to 424 17s. 6d. were passed for payment. It was decided to forward letters of thanks to all bodies who assisted at the gala, day last Saturday. A sub-committee, consisting of' Messrs. Foster, Smart,; Carter, Cox, and Mrs. Bennett, was set up to promote a 'promenade concert in aid of the fund. . At a meeting of the Petone Entertainment Society, it was decided to continue practices. Mr. Cronin was appointed conductor.
