NEW STATE COAL MINE.
REMARKS BY HON. E. MTvENZIE.
"The secret is not out," said the Hon. R. MlCenzie, Minister for Mines, when the statement made by Mr. J. W..Ellis, 1 of Hamilton, regarding the site of the' ! proposed State coal mine in the North Island was referred to him. "I am not -• in a position to say whether Mr. Ellis ' or the Engineer-in-Chief of Public Works discovered this particular seam of coal or any other seam of coal when locating the route of the Main Trunk line, but I ■ am in a. position to say that neither Mr., Ellis nor Mr. Holmes reported anything . about it to the Public Worts Department. Further, the locality stated in the' 1 paragraph submitted to me by no means corresponds with the locality of the seam which the Mines Department has located, and which it is expected will turn out to - be very valuable. The site is at present being prospected in order to ascertain the extent of the find, and I hope to be able to make a definite announcement on tha ■ subject before long." i' ■ ,
