THE TOKATOKA SWAMP.
■' Valuable -reclamation. ! • The Tokatoira swamp _ (near Dargaville). was visited by the Minister for Public Works last week.:. This: swamp comprises 21,000. acres, and is 2ft, below high-water spring tide level. The drainage of the swamp was taken in hand by the Government 13 years ago, and the place cut into sections.. ..The work has now. been handed over' to the Ofcaroatea County Council. Seventeen thousand acres have been drained, at a. cost of about ,£25,000, and another ,£20,000 should see the whole work .satisfactorily,.,completed. Stopbanksare; being put around' tne swamp to prevent'.the..tides overflowing, and although at present the land .is veixjvet and for-lorn-looking, it is stated' to be excellent cattle country, and a creamery has been already established. : The, roads across the swamp, are, however, very poor, and are stated to be absolutely .impassable in winter. It, is, stated that the swamp will carry a family of seven to every 100 acres, and already it supports .a.tptipulatioh of between 300 ahd'4oo.'\ V . v "V v
