WOOL FREED FROM SURTAX. Speaking tea Dominion reporter yesterday, a merchant mado some interesting remarks'with regard to ..the fact thai the United States Government had granted the minimum tariff to New Zealand. He stated that New Zealand exports to tho United States were confined chiefly to wool and hemp. Under the goneral tariff,- skins, hides, kauri gum, and hemp were admitted free. The minimum tariff rates on New Zealand wools were as under:—Fine and crossbred, 5Jd. per lb.; coarse wools, 6d.; carpet wools, 2d. to 3id. per lb.; and wool on skins $d. per day. Up. till now "■ a surtax of 25 per cent, had bad to be paid. In regard to.wool which was- , "afterwards re-exported in manufactured form, a' rebate was . allowed. As a result of President Taft's proclamation tho surtax , referred, to would now be removed. It appears that m 1908. only 304,5031b. of wool were exported direct from Now Zealand to the United States, as against 2,466,8831b. in 1907. A very considerable quantity of New Zealand wool also finds its way to the United States from the London market, but the exact figures were not available. : . . :. . ."■'■■
