HAWTBET AND OTHER SETTLE- "• ■ '■■ MENTS.A ballot was held at the District Land Office yesterday for tho Bale or selection of Section 20, Block IX, and part-Section 3, Block X, RuahhiG survey district, aggregating 2000 acres. Tho land is situated fourteen miles from Mangaweka, and is officially described as good grazing country, undulating to hilly, and well watered. Twelve applicants took part in the ballot, tho successful applicant being James Smith, of Mangnwekn. Ballots were also to have been held yesterday -for sections in .tho Hawtrey settlement, but in-each case only one •application was received. The. sections 'were therefore allotted to the following applicants:—Section 1, Block I, 11 acres 2 roods 27 perches, Charles -Gifford; Section 4, Block' I, 15 acres 1 rood 24 poles, Charles Woodward; Section: 9, ißlock I, 1 rood 9 perches, William E. Bateman; Section 2, Block 111, 10 acres, Thomas Lynch; Section 3, Block HI, Margaret Slater; Section 21, Block 111, 2 roods, 7.5 perches, Michael Kelly; Sections 2 and 4, Block IV, 3 roods, William Walker. The following sections in the Manganui survey district were also allotted without opposition:—Section 4, Block VI, 1124 acres, Henry Madden; Section 1, ; Blook VI, R. H. Huntington. SALE OI? There was keen competition for this lot, jvhich went to Mr.' Charle9 Tringham, Pigeon Bush, at .£155 per annum. These lots are situated on the railway line-between Kaitoke railway station','aiid Cross Creek, and comprise more, or less open country on tho Rimutaka ranges, suitable for grazing. Sub-divisions S and T, 1 rood each, upset .01, wore taken at .£ls and .£l6' respectively by Mr. Oswald Beero. 1 Wadestown Sections.—Two lots of ■ Wadestown land, containing 1 rood 1 porch and 1 rood 5 perches respectively, upset JJ2410 each, situated about 10 ohainsi north of tho Thorndon Quay tramway terminus, were' passed in.
