PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special . Correspondent.) Palmerston, March 31. The annual meeting-of the Old Boys' Football Club was held last night, Mr. G. Tortonsen presiding. The balancesheet showed the club to be in a healthy financial position, there being a balance to credit of .£26 19s. Nine new members were elected. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr.'-H. F. Gibbons; president, Mr. D. Buick, M-P.j vice-presidents, Messrs. Alf. Mahan, W. H. Fitzhcrbert, T. ChUds, A. H. Rogers, A. E. Bennett, P. C. Hanly, G. E. Trevor, M. O'Reilly, C. Bird, W. Smith, A. N. Gibbons, hi. S. Disoh, and Dr. Peach; hon. secretary, Mr. W. Reed; treasurer, Mr. W. Kyle; captain, Mr. J.' Brown; vice-captain, Mr. A. Downes; management committee, Messrs. M'William, A. Baker, Pickett, Peed, and Stagpoole; delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs. M'William, Tortonsen, and Pickett (seniors), and Messrs. Stubbs and Muller (juniors); third class, Mr. Fraser; selection committee, captain, vioe-captain, and Mr. Kyle. Sergeant : Stagpoole and Mr. G. Papps were elected life members. The easterly gale, which set in yesterday morning, still continues. Very little rain has fallen in the last twelve hours, but the wind has turned very cold. Trees, fences, and sheds have suffered a. good deal, and as already mentioned orchards of late apples have been considerably knocked about. Stock has felt the change, too, especially dairy cows, there being a perceptible fall in the supplies at the factories. At one o'clock this morning a fixe broke out in the rooms in King Chambers facing the Square, occupied by Mr. A. V. Barnard, dentist. Though the fire had got a good hold when tho alarm was. given, the fire brigade, under Superintendent C. C. Warner, put in some splendid work, and quickly had the conflagration under control, the damage Being estimated at abont £150. The premises belong to Mrs. Coombes, and are insured for J62000 in the Alliance, Mr. Burnard's effects also being insured in the same office for .£425. The other occupants of the building are: Messrs. O'Connor and Tydeman, jewellers; Mr. A. E. Clausen, crockeryware; and Mr. A. J. Mahon, clothier, all of whom hold heavy stocks. The fire started in the room directly over Messrs. O'Connor and Tydeman's workroom, but fortunately no damage was done to the stocks of the other occupants,, a very little water finding its way into the workroom of Messrs. O'Connor and Tydeman. Tho tender of Messrs. Griggs and Son, of Palmerston, has been accepted by' Mr. L. G. West, architect, for the erection of tho grandstand, stewards' stand, and other appointments on the Otaki Racing Club's new course. The work is to be completed in time for the club's meeting in June next. Two young men, named Charles Lowe and Frnnk Iskurtia,, were charged at the Police Court this morning with stealing a pair of boots from the establishment of Durward and On. Both pleaded guilty, but said they had been drinking, and did not know what they were doing. Each was fined £3, in default three months' im.prisowneat,'
