UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT. SOME INTERESTING CONTESTS. (By Telegraph-—Prc33 .Association.! Christohurch, March 29. The concluding rounds of the intercollegiate tennis tournament were played on the Avonside courts yesterday. Tho standard of play, as was naturally to be expected, was generally, much superior to that of the first day when the earlier rounds were deoided, some of the ladies' games particularly produoing good contests. Three of the five events; played—the ..men's singles, men's doubles) and ladies' went to Canterbury College, and twoladies' singles and combined doublesrto the Victoria College representatives. The other two colleges failed to secure a championship. 1 The real final of the men's ■" singles was played in the second round, when T. D. Smith (Canterbury) met and defeated'A, S, Moody (Otago), 6—4, 6—S, after a close game, . The result was to leave two Canterbury I College men to play oif in the L. S. Jennings and Smith—arid the former, who was undoubtedly the best player, in the tournament, easily disposed of his opponent, 6—3, 6—3. Jennings really was never extended, and his well-placed vollovs enabled j)im to win with ease. ' , In the final of the Jennings and Smith (Canterbury) met A. S. Moody and G. Gower (Otago), and won the first two Bets with little difficulty, the scores being: 6 —3, .6 —2. In the earlier. stages of the game the two Canterbury, men were not playing at all well, together,, but matters improved later on. Moody at times put in some good work, but Jennings's excellent net play broke down the Otago representatives' defence. ; "• > _ •; The ladies' championship singles produced, an interesting contest. between Miss B. I. L. Reeve (Victoria College;, and' Miss p. W.' Grace .(Canterbury). Both ladies played steadily, if somewhat monotonously, but Miss Grace could not get a proper length, and her short shots gave many advantages to her opponent. . Miss. Reeve, ' on the other hand, kept an excellent- length, and her returns .were very sure. .\TEere was no volleying work to: speak of in tho game, which was won t>y Miss Reeve,' 9—5." ... - ' ..' - Some good play was ■ also witnessed in tho. final of the ladies' doubles, between Misses B. 'I. L. Reeve and J. Tennant (Victoria College)-and Misses 15. \V. Grace and L. Paterson (Canterbury), the latter-winning, 9—4. The Canterbury ladies combined well, and their, driving was harder and better placed than that of their . opponents.. Miss Paterson, at times,' gpt in some very fine shots that , were not returned, and both she and her partner , played most steadily. The most disappointing event of _ the day wag the final of the combined doubles played between Miss. B. I. L, Reeve and G. M. Cleghorn (Victoria College) and; Miss L. Paterson and P. N. H. Beamish . (Canterbury). In' the.j first event which was won by Victoria College 6—2, the play .of the-two 1 men was faulty in the extreme but, in the second- set, they got. more • intoform again. >-The'ladies,- on the otlier hand,' played steadily and accurately from tho: beginning. . This - set-.was hotly contested.. At. one .stage ihe Canter- j bury College players had only to secure ono stroke, to win the . set, but-they failed, and, finally, the set'went io Victoria College; 9—7.
