. Sergeant. Stagpool 'has been , presented by members ■ of the 'masonic 1 craft with a ■ masonic jewel and a leather travelling bag. The ■ sergeant ■ was one of. the founders of Lodge Huia. It is understood that \an address is to -be presented to' Sergeant Stagpool by the residents,of the town before he leaves for Oamaru on March 25.
The Palmerston Boy Scouts KeJd their usual parade on Friday ovening. At the next parade instruction in ambulance, and stretcher, drill will be given. The High School Old Pupils' Association held their, annual meeting last night, Mr. J. E. Vernon, president, being in the chair. The report' and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were' elected:—President, Mr. J. E. Vernon ; vice-presidents, Miss Lynch, and Messrs. W. H. Collingwood, F. Foote, and W. Rutherford; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. M. Morris; committee, Misses Seeker, Fowler, Smith, Koobler, and Chapman, aad Messrs. Gardner, Peed, Eglinton, Nettlefold. and Tremaine.
At the High School tennis oourts yesterday afternoon a. series of maiches was played between teams of girls and boys, the former proving winners by four games to three, details being as follow: —Leah M'Crea beat B. Hodder, 6—4; Ruth Kelly beat M. Luxford, 5 — 6 ; Emily Pigott.iost to, C. Young, 2—6;' Ivy M'Keufcio beat, J. Bennett, 6—2; May Pigott beat W. West, 6—5; Mona M'Kenzie lost to W. Guy, 5—6; Edie Collingwood beat G. Harwood, 6—l. At 6.30 this morning an alarm was rung on the fire-bell and it was discovered that a fire had broken out under the floor of a houso in Worcester Street, occupied by Mr. M'Neil Proctor, and owned by Mr. Edkins, of Palmerston. The fire brigade quickly extinguished the flames, very little damage being done—£s would probahly oovr.r this. It appears tb.it some live a-sbes had. been Hitokti out, and the wind had. carried them into contact with sorno rubbish. The hour» and contents M'oro both injured.
