SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, March 15. Beautiful weather prevailed for the band contest •to-day, but there' was not a very, large attendance at the Opera House in the morning, when the B-flat bass and the E-flat bass solos were decided. The winner of the former; Bandsman P. Wilkins,. gave, a very eiven performance right through,, while. Bandsman ..Signal,, who. .won .the. E-fla.t event, was much superior to the other competitors. The garden 'party' l tendered to the visiting bandsmen by the citizens took place thns aiteriioon, and- was. a huge success. 1 Twelve bands marched, to the racecourse, where .some . 3000 people assembled, and the tai,ds- were formally welcomed by the Mayor. The Hon. John Bryce also spoke a few, .sards, -.welcoming tie bandsmen. Each of the bands then, played a selection in-hum, .and the Petone Band, which gave a delightful rendition of "Ora pro nobis;" with trombone solo, were accorded very_ hearty applause at the finish, the playing , of the soloist being especially well received:. .The other-bands also had a good reception, and the Wanganui Band gave a. masterly rendering of "Old Memories." Both the Petone and War nganui. Bands. are in splendid form, and a most exciting straggle for. championship honours is anticipated. •_ The after-' noon's function was brought to a. close by the playing of the march' "Electoral" b.v the massed bands under the conductorship 'of Mr. Jas. Crichton, who for so many years conducted the Wanganui Garrison Band. It , was voted easily, the finest performance ever given by massed j bands in, tie Dominion, and' the large crowd gave Mr. Grichtpn a reception which showed how popular he is with all., The bandsmen also showed their kindly feeling towards him by according him three ,hearty cheers.', Mr. Crichton has mado a wonderful recovery. after a long and. serious illness, and now seems quite Kb old self again. He showed all his old, enthusiasm aiid remarkable ability in conducting to-day.
