LOANS TO LOCAL BODIES. (By Toleerarh.—Special CorreaDondeht.) Palmerston, March U. A . rather important statement as to local bodies' loans was made by the secretary pf the - Oroua . Drainage Board (Mr. G. J. Armstrong) at the meeting of the board on Saturday. Mr. Armstrong said that lie had had an interview with Mr. Poynton (Superintendent of the New Zealand State. Guaranteed Advances Board) relative to the position - in the" matter. of a loan of .£4OO provisionally • granted under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 190S, and for which all the statutory procedure required had beentaken. Mr. Poynton had. stated that, under the ruling of the auditor and So-licitor-General, it was held that the passing of the State • Guaranteed Advances Act had repealed all grants, provisional or otherwise, under the Government Loans to .Local Bodies Act of 1908 to public bodies immediately on the coming into operation of the Guaranteed Advances Act, even .in respect ,of balances of, loans where , the total amount grant-, ed had not' been lifted at tjiat date. Consequently, the board should renew its. application for the £400; loan under the Act now in force. Mr. Poynton had also said that. all applications should be in by March 15, otherwise they would be too - late for' consideration. The board decided that a renewed application should be made for the ,£4OO loan to the New; Zealand State Guaranteed Advances Board. Residents of Palmerston have signed a guarantee to the amount of .£535. for the next, band contest if held in Palmerston. Mr. E. R. B. Holben, secretary of. the North Island' Band Association, has the matter in liand, and | hopes to be able to arrange that the nest contest will be .held here. Palmerston competitors at the Trentham rifle meeting won over .£4O. Of this amount Corporal Kells, Palmerston Rifles,-.-won ,£l6 55., and W. Randall, Linton Rifle Club, ..£ll. . There was a large number' of players on the Palmerston , bowling green on Saturday afternoon, including a rink which had come down from Marton to play the: holders .of the- Dixon. Challenge Cup—S. Russell, P. Wilson, A. Pickering, and F.' J. Tusker.(s.).. The Marton rinli comprised W. Ward, G. Duck, J. Bell, and.'H.: Sutcliffe (s.). Tlie Palmerston riiik still' holds the cup, having beaten the-.challengers by 20' to 15. Tlie cup holders also held , the Wishart Feathers, and a' team composed of A. Harris, Hansen, Abrahams, and Hodgins (s.) . challenged and\ defeated them by. 21 points to 20,: .after a very keen game. A Palmerston Club rink—Dixon, J. Smith, H. Nash, and J. A. Nash- (s.),—went to Feilding. on Saturday, afternoon in quest of the Yates Feathers, but failed to secure them, being beaten.by the holders—Crabbe, Clapham, Stewart, and Bartholomew (s.)—by 24 to 15. Entries' for the Maori tennis tournament to be held in Palmerston, on March 28 • have' already been received from Hawkers Bay (two teams), Aorangi. (two), Putiki (two), and Parewanui, Motuiti, Ohau,, Manakau, Moutoa; and Shannon (one .each).. The trophy is a gold and, silver cup, open, to any. combined mixed, double team of the Native race, presented by- Mr. T. U. Maramaru, ,; ol : Bulls, a. Putiki team being'-the present holders. The tournament will be. played on the courts of the. Palmerston. Club.-. The Palmerston Coursing' . Club has fixed the following'dates ior its meetings in ..the coming . season:—May '4 and .s;' June 23, 24, and 25. (Waterloo Cup'meet-' ing);' July and 28; and August 17and 18. The first stake is to be a .£SO prize for maidens.
